Winter trekking
The Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve is a fantastic destination for independent fell skiers. There are no marked trails in the winter. Ski trips require strong navigation and survival skills, as well as equipment suitable for harsh winter conditions. Midwinter is cold and dark, with temperatures dropping to –40°C. Only the most experienced skiers familiar with Arctic conditions should venture into the area at this time. In late winter, fell skiers can use the annually marked Halti winter trekking and maintenance trail or the snowmobile trail markings that run through the southern and eastern parts of the Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve. It is important to note that the markings may be incomplete or disappear in bad weather. During the crust snow period, skis can support you even outside the trails, but the demanding natural conditions can surprise skiers. Fell skiers must be aware of avalanche risks and avoid avalanche terrain.
