The Käsivarsi area is a wilderness of high fells, with peaks rising over a kilometer in height. Here, the headwaters of major rivers originate. The rugged wilderness is softened by rare plants and animals not found anywhere else in Finland. The Nordkalott trail, which is 800 km long, passes through the area. Käsivarsi is a beautiful but demanding destination for hikers and a magnificent experience for anglers.

Diverse destination for anglers! Free hook and line - and ice fishing are restricted in places, so familiarize yourself with the fishing regulations.

The Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve is a fantastic destination for independent fell skiers, as there are no marked trails in the area.

Nature

Käsivarsi area is known for its magnificent large fells with their rare plants and animals. Treeless fells, birch groves in fell valleys and winding rivers dominate the landscape.

Visitor's checklist

  • Everyman’s Right apply in the wilderness area
  • Making campfire is allowed in the terrainBuilding campfire is not recommended in areas where trees are scarce. If a designated campfire site is available within 500 meters, you must use the site for making a fire and not create a new campfire site. Collecting fallen tree branches and twigs for your fire is allowed. Do not use wood provided in the huts’ firewood sheds to make campfires.
  • Always keep pets on a leashKäsivarsi is a special reindeer herding area, and the reindeer must not be disturbed.
  • Temporary camping in the area is allowedTemporary camping with Everyman’s Right is allowed.
  • Be prepared for areas with limited or no mobile network coverageRemember to take a paper map and compass.
