Hiking

The Käsivarsi area is suitable for experienced hikers with skills for demanding open fell trekking. In the wilderness, one must be self-sufficient in all conditions. The Nordkalott trail, which is 800 km long, passes through the wilderness reserve, connecting the fell regions of Finland, Norway, and Sweden. There are no other marked hiking trails in the area, so basic navigation skills are essential for hikers.

The seasons in the high fells differ from the rest of Finland, so it is important to check current conditions before your trip. The period of snow-free ground varies annually in different parts of the wilderness, and snow can fall at any time of the year.

If you deviate from the route in the wilderness reserve, please note the movement restriction in the Ánnjaloanji nature reserve. Getting around there is prohibited from May 15th to September 1st for conservation reasons.

There are no day hiking trails in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve. The nearest marked trails can be found at Saana Fell and Malla Strict Nature Reserve, as well as near the Kilpisjärvi Nature Center. Please note the movement restrictions in nature conservation areas when hiking.

Käsivarsi is a reindeer herding area, and reindeer fences keep the reindeer in their designated grazing areas. If you open a gate, remember to close it behind you. If the gate is intentionally left open, it should also be left open.
