Bird watching

Approximately one hundred bird species have been observed nesting in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve. Spot the colorful-necked provincial bird of Lapland, the bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), learn to distinguish between the willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) and the rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), listen to the call of the rough-legged buzzard (Buteo lagopus), and witness the hunting of the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus).
Plant watching
The region of great fells is a rewarding destination for plant enthusiasts! The conditions in Käsivarsi are unique in Finland. Although the growing season is short, the Gulf Stream provides warmth. Additionally, the edges of the Scandinavian mountains bring lime to the soil, resulting in numerous plants that are not found elsewhere in the country. Many of the rare plants in the area are protected.
Mountain biking
There are no marked cycling trails in Kilpisjärvi but cycling is permitted everywhere except in Malla Strict Nature Reserve and Saana Nature Reserve. There are unmarked paths and tracks in the Käsivarsi area but they are rocky, difficult to tour and challenging due to elevation differences. Mires, streams and rivers may be difficult to cross with a bicycle. Cyclists must be prepared to find their way independently and carry their bikes from time to time. Find out more about mountain biking options in Enontekiö (enontekiolapland.com).
Paddling
The most well-known paddling route in the wilderness reserve is extremely challenging Poroeno – Lätäseno. Total length of this paddling route is 100 km and the elevation difference is approximately 265 m. Paddling down the Poroeno-Lätäseno river requires good preparation in advance. Before you leave, check the water level in the river. Severe flooding causes danger of death; when the water is too low, the river is too rocky to paddle.
Hunting
Käsivarsi is a grouse hunting area for hunters. Even the lack of game does not spoil a wilderness trip in the fells. The permit area is located in a special reindeer herding area, where reindeer herding is particularly significant as a livelihood. Reindeer herding must be taken into account, especially when hunting with a dog.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is not an everyman's right. Recreational snowmobiling is only allowed on designated snowmobile routes and tracks, as well as on the ice of water bodies. In the Käsivarsi Wilderness Rrea, snowmobiling is only permitted on Metsähallitus snowmobile tracks, and it requires a paid permit. Read more about snowmobiling and purchase a track permit here (eraluvat.fi).
