Hunting

The Tsarmitunturi wilderness reserve is part of permit area 1612 Tsarmitunturi (eraluvat.fi). A limited number of small game permits are sold daily, allowing non-residents to hunt ptarmigan, hare, small predators, and waterfowl during confirmed hunting seasons. Reindeer herding is a significant livelihood in the area, so hunting with a dog is prohibited with small game permits. There may be seasonal restrictions due to reindeer herding work.

Hunting is of great importance to local residents as a form of recreation, and traditional dishes made from game bring variety to the northern table. The fells and hills of the Tsarmitunturi wilderness reserve are popular hunting grounds for locals. The main game animals are moose, capercaillie, and ptarmigan. "Tsarmi" is bear territory, and countless are the kilometers that hunters have traveled tracking bears.

Residents permanently living in the municipalities of Enontekiö, Inari, and Utsjoki have free hunting rights on state lands in their home municipality.
