To Kemihaara by car
Kemihaara Wilderness Reserve is located in Savukoski municipality. The only public road to the Wilderness Reserve leads from the village of Savukoski; the road ends at the boundary between the Wilderness Reserve and Urho Kekkonen National Park in Kemihaara, where there is a parking area.
- The distance from Savukoski village to Kemihaara parking area is 107 km. Follow Road 967 for approx. 12 km and continue directly to Road 9671 (Korvatunturintie). The road runs through Martti village, continues towards Tulppio and turns left to Kemihaara approx. 3 km before Tulppion Majat. The road is kept open regularly in winter (maintenance category III, vayla.fi).
- Please note that in order to reach Kemihaara Wilderness Reserve from the parking area, you must cross a river. There is no official river crossing in the area.
- Kemihaara has no permanent settlement or services. The nearest shop and fuel distribution point can be found in the village of Savukoski.
In the snow-free season, the Wilderness Reserve can also be accessed along forest roads if the vehicle has sufficient ground clearance. These roads may be in poor condition.
- To the western part of the Wilderness Reserve via Lokka: From Lokka village, drive towards Pihtijoki, turn right at Mukkajoenrova and keep going until you reach Taltukkaselkä. The cross-country hike from this point to Uittipiekka hut is approx. 6 km.
- To the southern part of the Wilderness Reserve from Savukoski direction: From Savukoski-Kemihaara road, turn left at the village of Ruuvaoja. Drive towards Marjavaara by the north side of Nivatunturi fell and continue to Sorvortantunturi fell. The cross-country hike from this point to Uittipiekka hut is approx. 9 km.
