Kemihaara Wilderness Reserve is suitable for experienced hikers, and for beginners only in the company of an experienced hiker.
Preferably do not set off on a trek alone. In the event of an emergency a hiking companion can be invaluable.
Before setting out on a trek explain your exact route to your close friends and family. If your route changes tell your contact as soon as possible. Remember to also tell them when you have returned from your trek.
It is important that you get as much information as possible about your hiking destination in advance and prepare for your trip thoroughly. Take into account the different seasons when packing equipment and food. Follow the weather forecasts and warnings (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi). Prepare also for suddendly changing weather conditions, such as storms.
In winter, trekking is very demanding. Harsh weather and poor light in the middle of winter cause difficulties. The temperature can drop to -40° and during the darkest part of winter there is only a couple of hours of daylight. Normal cross-country skis are not sturdy enough for the harsh conditions in the Wilderness Reserve which does not have any maintained winter trails. If you encounter snowmobile tracks, be cautios following them. Losing your way is especially dangerous during winter.
A paper map, a compass and good orienteering skills are essential.
Prepare for emergencies such as having to camp out in the forest.
Make sure you pack a first-aid kit.
If you face an emergency on your hike, e.g. get lost, get injured or observe wildfire, call 112 and report an emergency. The area is covered by the statutory rescue services, which can be reached through the Emergency Response Centre.

Mobile phone coverage

Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the Kemihaara Wilderness Reserve without signal. There may also be some smaller spots where there is interference. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. It may be worth removing the SIM card from your phone and then trying again to make emergency call. Different phones also differ in their coverage.
Keep your mobile phone warm at all times. Certain phone models do not work when the temperature falls below zero. You should therefore let someone close to you know your planned route beforehand. To keep your mobile phone charged, bring along a spare power source, a spare battery or an old phone with a working battery.
