When you notice a violation or suspect one has occurred, you can report your observation to a wilderness inspector (eräluvat.fi). We hope you leave your contact information with the report, but you can also report anonymously.
Wilderness supervision is a service and educational work for the benefit of Finnish nature. The task of the wilderness inspector is to monitor the legality and permissibility of activities and the use of nature on state-owned lands.

Dress in colorful and weather-appropriate clothing. Check the weather and conditions in advance. Pack a map, compass, and enough drinking water for your hike. Equip yourself with sturdy, waterproof shoes. It’s also a good idea to bring a first aid kit.
Iso-Syöte is one of the snowiest areas in Finland. In Iso-Syöte, there can already be a lot of snow and severe frost, even if it is not yet winter in the coastal area near Oulu. Prepare for your hike according to the weather conditions! The best means of transport outside the trail are forest skis or snowshoes.

Are reindeer dangerous to hikers? Generally, reindeer avoid humans. However, during the autumn mating season, a large antlered male guarding his herd of females may charge at a person who comes too close to the herd. If you encounter a herd of reindeer in late summer or autumn, it is advisable to wait for the herd to move away or to bypass the herd while monitoring the actions of the male reindeer.
