The Puulajireitti Tree Species Trail that starts from the Research Park/(Kokonharju) parking area introduces visitors to the versatile Punkaharju tree species park. The trail runs along the gravel roads of the Punkaharju Research Park and presents dozens of tree species and their special forms to visitors. A wide range of forest research is conducted in the Research Park area, and there are also observation sites along the trail that present the themes of the research. Approximately halfway through the trail, you can take a detour (approximately 200 metres) to the Karjalankallio lean-to shelter to admire the scenery of Lake Puruvesi and enjoy a snack.

At the starting point of the trail, the Kokonharju parking area has information boards describing the Punkaharju area and the history and present day of forest research in the Research Park. The information boards also contain a map of the area.
The Karjalankallio lean-to shelter and its campfire sites are located at approximately the halfway point of the trail (approximately 200 metre detour from the Puulajireitti Tree Species Trail). The lean-to shelter also has a dry toilet and woodshed. The toilet is accessible for a wheelchair user with an assistant.
Part of the trail runs along the Research Park's gravel roads, on which driving is also permitted. The speed limit is 30 km/h.
