The heritage landscape of Punkaharju consists of barren and light-filled pine woods on the eskers and views over Lake Saimaa. The present-day visitor is enchanted by the scenery, as was our national poet in the past. The versatile trails and services as well as the large range of activities in the area offer something to see and experience for every taste.

Activities and trails

The best way to experience the landscapes and special natural features of the area is walking the trails that crisscross the esker.

Cycling is a comfortable way to explore the esker area.

In Punkaharju, you can find a Nordic skating route on natural ice that is one of the longest in Finland, or up to 17 km.

Natural Features of Punkaharju

Punkaharju is one of the world’s oldest nature reserves. This destination is also a national landscape and is an example of esker formation at its most beautiful.

  • The destination is a nature reserveEveryman’s Right are not valid as such in the nature reserve.
  • Camping in the area is prohibited
  • Make campfires only in designated sitesLighting fires is only permitted at Karjalankallio lean-to shelter, where campfires are also allowed when a forest fire warning has been issued. Lighting fires in the nature reserve is prohibited.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagThere is no recycling point in the area. Bring a trash bag and take the trash with you.
  • Always keep pets on a leashDog waste should be cleaned away from the paths.
