The route marker is a green circle.
The trail starts from the parking area. Before heading out, you should take in the views from the lookout tower next to the parking area.
At first, the trail descends the slope of Lauhanvuori along a straight and narrow path and turns to the north.
It leads you through a light-filled hillside forest along paths covered with pine needles. Quite soon you can take a detour to the west, to Kaivolampi camping area and campfire site.
The trail continues east along a wider forest path. After a short distance, you can take a detour to Kärkikeidas day hut.
After Kärkikeidas, you return to the original trail section and follow a fairly easy needle-covered path for a while, until you reach a short gravel road section, from which you return to a forest path.
Spitaalijärvi cooking shelter and campfire site are also worth stopping at. You might want to take a dip in the clear waters of Spitaalijärvi Lake, even if there is no official bathing area. If you only wish to do the 16-kilometre circle trail, head north from Lake Spitaalijärvi and return to the parking area at the highest point of Lauhanvuori. This is an uphill section.
If you plan to complete both circle trails, head to the connecting section from Spitaalijärvi. The connecting trail follows gravel roads towards Kivijata stone field. The road section along Lauhanvuorentie goes downhill.
The second circle trail section starts at Kivijata. You should get off your bike and have a look at the amazingly large stone field of Kivijata.
The trail continues towards Aumakivi, which is a large boulder known as a tor, the core part of weathered bedrock.
The trail then continues along a forest path and gravel road back to Lauhanvuorentie and the connecting trail. The return journey is tough as it is mostly uphill.
You take the connecting trail back to Lake Spitaalijärvi and then continue on past Spitaalijärvi camping area and campfire site towards the top of Lauhanvuori and the parking area. Please note that Spitaalijärvi camping area and campfire site are located on different side of the lake than the cooking shelter. Overnight stays in the cooking shelter are not allowed.
