Starting point: Björkö´s information board, Byviken.
The Björkö nature trail circles the island’s inner lake, Insjön, and the trail information boards introduce the island’s diverse nature and history. The scenery along the trail is stunning.
For most of the way to the lake’s northern side, the trail moves through treeless rocky terrain, sometimes close to the shore, so walking can be chilly and wet in strong southwest winds.
The eastern side of Insjön is more sheltered terrain, and at times, cows can be seen grazing there.
The trail is marked with meter-high posts and by clearing the undergrowth.
The trail is occasionally difficult to walk. Bridges and duckboards have been built in the most challenging spots. It’s especially important to be cautious in rainy conditions, as the lichen-covered rocks become extremely slippery when wet.
Endpoint: Björkö´s information board, Byviken.
Byviken’s rest stop has a campfire site and information board, and nearby are a dry toilet and a tent area. Along the rocky shore near the trail, there are 20 mooring loops for boaters; Byviken is the most popular natural harbor in the southern Archipelago Sea.
On Björkö, you can also follow a marked 1 km trail from the ferry dock on the northern part of the island to Byviken. Along the route, there are leafy forests and open pastureland.
