Making a fire

By decision, Metsähallitus has granted a general permit for making fires in the terrain in Lapland. Dry branches, twigs and small root stocks lying on the ground can be used to build a fire. A serviced campfire site must be used if one can be found within a half-kilometre radius. In protected areas with a valid management plan or regulations, the contents of these plans and regulations must be observed when lighting fires. When a wildfire warning is in effect, making fires is also prohibited at built campfire sites. When a wildfire or grassland fire warning has been issued, making fires is also prohibited at campfire sites. Check for any warnings that are currently in force. (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi) The prohibition does not apply to cooking shelters or other fireplaces with a flue.

Safety

Vätsäri Wilderness Reserve is only suitable for highly experienced hikers. There are practically no services, and one cannot survive in the wilderness without proper equipment: maps, compass, tent, clothing, sleeping bag and sufficient amount of food.
Also remember to always carry a first-aid kit.
The conditions in Vätsäri are arctic, which requires special features of the equipment. Summer only arrives in mid-June, and permanent snow cover often comes already in October. During winter frost periods, the temperature may stay below -20 degrees Celsius for days. Without proper preparation and equipment, the excursion can be fatal to the inexperienced.

If you get lost, suffer injuries or see a wildfire, call the emergency number 112 and report the emergency. The area is covered by the statutory rescue services, which can be reached through the Emergency Response Centre. Also, always remember to let someone know when you have arrived at your destination to avoid a rescue mission being organised unnecessarily. Rescue services charge for unnecessary searches.
Remember to inform your friends and family of your schedule and route plan.

Mobile phone coverage

Although mobile networks have a wide coverage in Finland, there may be blind spots in the Vätsäri Wilderness Reserve. Check the coverage of your mobile network with your mobile phone operator. In addition, there are always places where the mobile phone does not work or calls are disrupted. In such situations, going to an open place that is higher than its surroundings and/or removing your phone's SIM card while you make an emergency call may help. You should keep your phone warm and carry food and drink. Certain phone models do not work in sub-zero temperatures, which is why you should inform someone of your route plan and schedule. To ensure that your mobile phone does not run out of power, you should bring a backup power supply, a spare battery, or an old phone with a working battery.

Fishing

Catch fish by hook and line fishing and ice fishing are allowed under Everyone’s Rights, with the exception of flowing waters and special waters.

Lure fishing with a single rod is allowed with the Fisheries Management Fee, excluding flowing waters and special waters.

Activities subject to a permit

As a rule, a permit issued by Metsähallitus is required for activities other than those included in Everyone’s Rights. These may include research and organised events.
