In Vätsäri Wilderness Reserve, the only marked route is the Piilola Trail, which connects the Vätsäri Wilderness Reserve and the Övre Pasvik National Park in Norway. A 14km marked route goes from Kirakkajärvi to the Pakanajoki hut, on the northern side of the wilderness reserve.

Vätsäri is a very demanding hiking destination even for hikers of marked routes. The terrain is rocky, and the Piilola Trail also has mires to be crossed that can be very watery in rainy weather or otherwise during flooding. Those hiking in Vätsäri must have a good command of wilderness skills.
