Overnight stays in Tarvantovaara Wilderness Reserve

In the Wilderness Reserve a hiker can stay overnight in their own tent or in an open wilderness hut.

Camping

Camping is permitted as an Everyman's Right.

  • You need to carry a tent or equivalent, even if you plan to stay in open wilderness huts.
  • It is recommended to camp on the grounds of the open wilderness huts or at places which have been previously used for camping, to avoid wearing of the ground.
  • When camping, be considerate towards other hikers and those staying overnight. They may be tired after their day’s hike and wish to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.

Huts

  • An open wilderness hut is shared accommodation where self-guided hikers can rest and spend the night free of charge.

  • Sálvvošjávri / Salvasjärvi Open Wilderness Hut

    A modest open wilderness hut is available year-round. A demanding wilderness destination. Hut is located near the border of Norway, on the eastern shore of Salvasjärvi Lake which is located northwest of Salvastunturi Fell. Hut is located along the Hetta-Kilpisjärvi snowmobile trail. The hut is located on the shore of Lake Salvasjärvi. Check the exact location of the hut on the map. The paths leading to the reindeer summer marking place at Lake Salvasjärvi go through the yards of the cooperative's private cabins, so do not camp there, but head to the yard of the open wilderness hut. The open wilderness hut is a shared and free resting and overnight place for independent hikers (not for companies). You can stay in wilderness huts for one or two nights without a reservation. Be prepared for the possibility that there may not be enough space to sleep in the hut. Facilities: - Sleeping places for 6. - Heating with a stove. - No drinking water point. Water from natural sources must be purified before drinking. - No waste management. Take your own waste out of the area. - Bring your own cooking utensils. - Pets are allowed in the hut only with the consent of other users.

  • Čiekŋalisjávri / Syväjärvi Open Wilderness Hut

    A modest open wilderness hut is available year-round. A demanding wilderness destination. Hut is located on the southern shore of Jiehtájohka River which starts from the southwest of Čiekŋalisjávri Lake. It is approximately 2 km from Čiekŋalisjávri Lake to the hut. The open wilderness hut is a shared and free resting and overnight place for independent hikers (not for companies). You can stay in wilderness huts for one or two nights without a reservation. Be prepared for the possibility that there may not be enough space to sleep in the hut. Facilities: - Sleeping places for 4. - Heating with a stove. - No drinking water point. Water from natural sources must be purified before drinking. - No waste management. Take your own waste out of the area. - Bring your own cooking utensils. - Pets are allowed in the hut only with the consent of other users.
