Hiking services

There are two open wilderness huts within Tarvantovaara Wilderness Reserve. They are intended for one to two night stays.

Accessible services

There are no specific services for the disabled in Tarvantovaara Wilderness Reserve.
The building, which houses Fell Lapland Visitor Centre is accessible by wheelchair. The vistor centre is located in the village of Hetta. A campfire site shelter by the visitor centre is also accessible by wheelchair. Fell Lapland Visitor Centre has an accessible toilet.

Campsites

  • As campsites are shared resting places, you should show consideration towards other hikers.
  • There is no waste management at the campsites, so bring your rubbish home.
  • There is no designated campfire sites in the wilderness area. In Northern Lapland Metsähallitus allows building campfires if you use fallen branches and twigs as firewood. In places where there is a maintained campfire site within 500 metres, all fires must be lit at the campfire site. In nature reserves for which a maintenance and utilisation plan or regulations have been issued, you must comply with the items outlined in these documents when lighting fires. Lighting campfires is not recommended in areas with few trees. When selecting a spot for your campfire use an old campfire site if you can find one.
  • Before you light a fire, always check if any forest fire warnings are in effect. When a forest fire warning has been issued, lighting fires is prohibited.
  • Do not use wood provided in the huts’ firewood sheds to make campfires. It is intended for heating the huts only. Think of sustainability and use the firewood supplies sparingly. All firewood is transported to the hut across a distance of hundreds of kilometres.
  • Do not burn rubbish or tear off bark from living trees. You can use a small amount of clean paper and cardboard to light your fire.
  • The last person to leave the campfire site is always responsible for putting out the fire.

Drinking water

  • Always boil water from natural sources before drinking it.
  • Do not wash dishes or yourself in natural waters or on well covers.
  • After use, remember to soak any washing water into the ground far enough away from natural waters or water supply points.
  • Read more about drinking water.

Waste disposal

The wilderness reserve's open wilderness huts still have waste bins. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own waste out of the wilderness reserve.

  • Biodegradable waste should be placed in a dry toilet or composter, and small amounts of clean paper and cardboard can be used as kindling in a campfire.
  • Take your rubbish home, do not burn it.
  • Remember to bring some rubbish bags when you go out.
  • Do not throw food waste out in the forest.
