Tarvantovaara Wilderness Reserve is a perfect retreat for experienced hikers looking for peace and quiet as well as unforgettable nature experiences. The wilderness area and Lätäseno-Hietajoki Mire Reserve, which borders Tarvantovaara in the northwest, have an extremely diverse bird population. The wilderness area is still relatively unknown by the public, but experienced bird watchers have found it.

  • The mires are mainly palsa bogs, which are bogs with frost mounds rising from them
  • Many of the rivers that flow into the River Muoniojoki have their source on the fell tundra or at the area's lakes and mires
  • The northern limit of pine forests runs at the southern boundary of the wilderness area and fell tundra rises near the Norwegian border

Tarvantovaara is the ideal destination for experienced hikers looking for peace and quiet as well as unforgettable nature experiences.

There are plenty of rivers in Tarvantovaara Wilderness Reserve, which are in their natural state and have a diverse array of fish in them.

There are two rivers, Palojoki and Tarvantojoki, within the wilderness area along which canoeing is possible.

Visitor's checklist

  • Everyman’s Right apply in the wilderness area
  • Temporary camping in the area is allowedTemporary camping with Everyman’s Right is allowed. It is recommended to camp on the grounds of the open wilderness huts or at places which have been previously used for camping, to avoid wearing of the ground.
  • Making campfire is allowed in the terrainIf a designated campfire site is available within 500 meters, you must use the site for making a fire and not create a new campfire site. Collecting fallen tree branches and twigs for your fire is fine. Do not use wood provided in the huts’ firewood sheds to make campfires. Always check for any wildfire warnings in effect before making a fire.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagBring a trash bag and take the trash with you.
  • Always keep pets on a leashTarvantovaara is a special reindeer herding area, and the reindeer must not be disturbed.
  • Take the Sámi cultural environment into considerationBe respectful and do not damage the sacred sites of the Sámi people.
  • Be prepared for areas with limited or no mobile network coverageRemember to take a paper map and compass.
