If you witness or suspect a violation, you can report your observations to the warden (eraluvat.fi). Although we would like for you to leave your contact details when filing a report, you may also file a report anonymously.
Wilderness supervision work aims to serve and educate people in matters relating to Finnish nature. Metsähallitus employs wilderness inspectors in its public administrative duties unit to conduct this work. The game and fisheries wardens lead the supervision work in state-owned land and water areas and they are experts on the nature and terrain of their respective regions.

Tips for a safe trip to Syöte

Dress for hiking in colourful clothes and according to the weather. Find out about the weather and conditions in advance. Pack a map, a compass, and enough drinking water for your trip. Equip yourself with sturdy, waterproof shoes for your hike. Make sure you pack a first-aid kit.
Syöte is one of the snowiest areas in Finland. There can already be a lot of snow and severe frost in Syöte, even if winter hasn't yet arrived in the Oulu region closer to the sea. Prepare for your trip according to the weather conditions in Syöte! Off the trail, the best means of travel are forest skis or snowshoes.
Register your arrival at parking places, campfire sites and other facilities around the park in the notebooks or guest books provided, as this can help in cases of emergency. Comments and suggestions for improvements are welcome.

The water in the springs and running water in the brooks of the National Park is usually good for drinking. However, the quality of the water cannot be monitored, so the use of natural water is at your own risk.
When hiking outside the marked trails, it is necessary to bear in mind that the spruce forests typical for the area are quite dense, so you cannot see very far.
Are reindeer dangerous to hikers? Usually, reindeer avoid humans. In autumn, during the reindeer rutting season, a large antlered male guarding his herd of females may charge at a person who gets too close to the herd. If you encounter a herd of reindeer in late summer or autumn, it is advisable to wait for the herd to move away or to bypass the herd while observing the actions of the male reindeer.
