Hiking & outdoor recreation
Siikalahti is an excellent destination for a day trip! From the parking area, it’s about a 200-meter walk to the Siikalahti Nature Hut, which is open to the public from April to October. The path is hardened, but includes a relatively steep uphill and downhill section over the short distance. The hut is unstaffed. The exhibition inside tells the story of Siikalahti’s history, nature, and of course, its birds! The entrance is also accessible by wheelchair.
In the yard of the Nature Hut, there is a covered fireplace with a chimney and picnic tables where visitors can enjoy their own snacks. Making a fire at this location is allowed even during a wildfire warning. The fireplace is open on one side, making it accessible for wheelchair users as well.
A 1-kilometer nature trail leads from the parking area to the Ripekesaari birdwatching tower, passing by the Nature Hut, another bird tower, and a viewing platform along the way. Just before the Ripekesaari birdwatching tower, the trail offers a short detour to a bird hide, where birds can be observed even without binoculars.
Along the trail, nature information boards provide insights into Siikalahti’s past and the area’s rich biodiversity. Visitors are required to stay on the marked trail. The path also reveals the impact of the Asta and Veera storms of 2010 - fallen trees have been left in place to provide valuable habitats for many endangered species. Over time, these trees will decay and decompose, making way for new forest growth. Please note that the trail is not maintained during winter.
