Sanginjoki hiking trails take hikers through diverse forest nature in close proximity to the City of Oulu. Visitors are enchanted by the rich biodiversity of the area, with lush banks along the Kalimeenoja River, the old-growth forest of Asmonkorpi and the dry lichen heaths of Isokangas. The nature reserve is named after the Sanginjoki River, which flows along the boundary of the nature reserve.

Activities and trails

Sanginjoki hiking trails are mainly easy to hike. The combined length of the trails is around 40 kilometres.

In Sanginjoki Nature Reserve you can sight many birds that favour old forests, such as Siberian jay, three-toed woodpecker and Eurasian pygmy owl.

Nature of the Sanginjoki Nature Reserve

The Sanginjoki Nature Reserve consists of forests of different ages. The landscape is fed by the Sanginjoki River and various small waterbodies. Bird life in the area is dominated by forest species.

  • Camp only at permitted camping sitesCamping is only permitted in the immediate vicinity of designated rest and campfire sites, and huts.
  • Make campfires only in designated sitesAlways check the current wildfire warning before making a fire. During a wildfire warning, fires are only allowed in cooking shelters with a chimney.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagBring a trash bag and take the trash with you or to the recycling point.
  • Always keep pets on a leashDogs may only be off leash with a separate permit. Dog droppings must be swept off the trails to the side.
