Winter biking
In winter, you can admire fell landscapes and snowy forests from the saddle of a bike. Winter biking trails are maintained with snowmobiles, but weather conditions may affect their condition and level of difficulty. You must remember to prepare well for winter biking trails, as you will cover a lot of ground quickly, and your mobile phone reception is not always guaranteed. Bikes can be rented from local entrepreneurs.
Snowshoeing and winter hiking
The hill and fell landscapes of Sallatunturi are ideal for snowshoeing. Snowshoeing trails are not maintained, but they are usually tamped down by ordinary winter shoes during busy periods. The Taivaantavoittelijan taival trail, which climbs to the top of Iso Pyhätunturi, is one of the most popular trails. Snowshoes can be rented from local entrepreneurs.
There are also several maintained trails for winter hiking in Salla National Park and its neighbouring areas. There are short and easy alternatives for the whole family, but also longer, more rugged trails for those wanting a challenge.
Birdwatching
Almost 150 bird species are seen in Salla annually, of which more than 100 can be spotted during the best observation period in early summer. The little bunting (Emberiza pusilla) favours marshy areas, and Salla has one of the largest populations of this bird in Finland. Species of the small wilderness lakes include the goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), smew (Mergellus albellus) and swans (Cygninae). The best way to see bird species of old-growth forests is to walk along the hiking trails and open up your senses. Salmijoki canyon and Palotunturi-Aikkipetsi area are particularly popular.
Paddling
Aatsinkijoki is the best river for paddling in Salla. Hangasjärvi lake is also a popular paddling destination in the local area.
