Miekojärvi offers versatile opportunities for fishing. The fish life in the lake includes at least 17 species; the key ones for fishing include the trout (Salmo trutta), pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), vendace, (Coregonus albula), whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), pike (Esox lucius), perch (Perca fluviatilis) and burbot (Lota lota). Trolling, netting and traditional hook-and-line fishing are examples of different techniques used on the lake. Commercial fishing is also pursued in Miekojärvi.

For rod fishers' convenience, the greatest part of the lake belongs to Miekojärvi angling permit area no. 2520 (eraluvat.fi). All fishers aged from 18 to 69 must pay the fisheries management fee (eraluvat.fi) before fishing. If you fish with multiple rods or lures, you will also need the aforementioned angling permit 2520. Hook-and-line and ice fishing are allowed free of charge with one rod. Check the boundaries and permit conditions of the permit area (eraluvat.fi).

A large share of Lake Miekojärvi belongs to Pello-Ylitornio trap permit area No 2012. You always need a trap permit for trap fishing in this area. Check the boundaries and permit conditions of the permit area (eraluvat.fi).

When out and about on the water, watch out for other fishers' nets and traps and avoid fishing on fairways and in the vicinity of shores with housing.
