At its best, the hard spring snow allows easy movement through snowy forests on foot, by kick sled or even by bicycle. The snow begins to carry weight after it has first melted and become saturated, and then freezes hard again during the night. Periods of night frost are often associated with high pressure, bringing clear, bright and sunny days.

Gently sloping, sparse forest is ideal
The best terrain for skiing when the snow has frozen hard in spring is gently sloping and lightly wooded. In such landscapes, it is possible to enjoy easy descents without gaining too much speed on the hard snow.

It is advisable to set out early, as the snow surface softens as the day goes on. At first, the softer surface feels pleasant, but later in the afternoon the snow may begin to give way and skis can sink in. Steel edged fell skis are best suited to these conditions.

Spring is a sensitive time for birds
When the snow cover freezes hard, many animals also benefit. For example, reindeer are able to reach lichen growing higher up in tree branches thanks to the snow carrying their weight.

Even though hard spring snow makes it possible to travel long distances, spring is a sensitive time in nature. Many birds have already begun nesting or other breeding activities. When encountering birds, it is best to change direction and avoid disturbing them.
