Fishing in the National Park

Fishing is regulated in accordance to the Act establishing the National Park and the park regulations. The National Park comprises water areas belonging both to the state and to various joint property management associations.

Fishing permits

The permit areas of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park are:

National Park's fisheries in the municipalities of Muonio, Kittilä and Kolari

Waters in the national park where fishing is allowed using one rod include hook and line fishing, ice fishing, and lure fishing with the fisheries management fee (excluding flowing waters), and with a Metsähallitus angling permit (including flowing waters):

  • Lake Sarvijärvi
  • Lake Allijärvi
  • Waters to the south of Road 79 (leading from Muonio to Kittilä).
  • Some of the streams belong to permit area 2410 Western Lapland while the River Lainiojoki, for example, is mostly a private water area, and the permit area does not include the state-owned water area.
  • To find the permit areas, go to the Excursionmap.fi service and select Hunting and Fishing in the map layer menu.

Lake Pallasjärvi

  • Fishing in Lake Pallasjärvi is managed by the Pallasjärvi Fishery Management Board.
  • Ice fishing and hook and line fishing in Lake Pallasjärvi are free of charge. With the exception of hook and line fishing and ice fishing, all fishers must pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are: under 18 years old, over 70 years old, or have turned at least 65 by 31 December 2023. Please carefully review the fisheries management fee's details on the Eräluvat website (eraluvat.fi).
  • All fishing is prohibited within a radius of approx. 150 metres from the mouth of the Pyhäjoki River (Inganniemi–Pirttiniemi/Taloniemi) to secure the passage of migratory fish.
  • You can fish on state-owned lands along the Pallasjoki River, which flows from Lake Pallasjärvi to Ounasjoki River, if you have [2410 Western Lapland angling permit purchased from Metsähallitus (eraluvat.fi)]((https://www.eraluvat.fi/en/areas/2410-western-lapland-505) Please carefully review the permit area details on the Eräluvat website. Check also the catch quota, minimum fish size and closed seasons.
  • The two boat ramps on Lake Pallasjärvi are located in Hirvaslahti and Pallaslompolo. See the Excursionmap.fi for their locations.
  • Keeping a private boat on the lake shore is subject to a permit.
  • The use of motor boats is allowed on the lake, provided that no noise or other environmental harms are caused.

Lake Keimiöjärvi

From the six-pane window of the dark, remote cabin, the view opens up to the lake and the fell.
On the eastern shore of Lake Keimiöjärvi, there is a Open Wilderness hut, which is a 3.5-kilometer walk from the Koivarova parking area.

Ounasjoki River and Äkäsjoki River

Note: Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are completely prohibited in the rapids and flowing sections of migratory fish waters.

The National Park's fisheries in the municipality of Enontekiö

The most important lakes and ponds in the National Park in which hook and line fishing, ice fishing and lure fishing with a single rod are allowed for those who have paid the fisheries management fee.

Please remember that hook and line fishing and ice fishing are always prohibited in streams and rapids in waters used by migratory fish.
The fisheries management fee does not entitle you to fish in streams and rapids of water systems used by migratory fish.

In Eräluvat.fi, you can pay the fisheries management fee and purchase fishing permits for state-owned water areas where a separate permit is required for fishing.

You need not pay the fisheries management fee for ice fishing, hook and line fishing or fishing with a simple herring rig and a single rod only, or if you are under 18 or over 70 years of age or turned 65 before 31 December 2023. However, you can still pay the fisheries management fee in these cases – it is an investment in nature.

Fishing is prohibited

Fishing is not allowed in the spawning waters of the trout found in Lake Pallasjärvi or in brooks with a natural trout population. The waters in the park area with natural char populations are protected from fishing. Consequently, all types of fishing are prohibited in the following water systems, including their tributaries and headwaters:

  • Onnasjoki River, including Onnasjärvet Lakes
  • River Siosjoki
  • River Pippojoki
  • River Ruotajoki
  • River Hannujoki, including Pienet Raasikaltiot Lakes
  • River Pahajoki, including Lake Hukkajärvi
  • River Kuoppajoki, excluding Lake Kuoppajärvi
  • River Saariselänoja
  • River Ylijoki
  • River Nammalajoki
  • All brooks and ditches discharging into Lake Vuontisjärvi in Muonio, including Riivinjärvet Lakes
  • River Pyhäjoki, including Killinpoikanjärvet Lakes and Hanhijärvi Lake
  • River Ylisenpäänoja including Lake Rautujärvi and Lake Ylisenpäänjärvi
  • River Lompolonoja
  • Lake Rautujärvi
  • Lake Pahtajärvi
  • Lake Maanselkäjärvi
  • Lake Saarijärvi and Lake Hietajärvi beside it
  • Lake Palsijärvi
  • Suaskuru ponds
