History of Espoonlahti Nature Reserve

Remains of Bronze Age settlements have been found near the current Espoonlahti Nature Reserve, and the oldest signs of agriculture and slash-and-burn farming are approximately 1100 to 1400 years old.

The Espoo Manor’s lands from the late 16th century until the 1960s

The lands of the current Nature Reserve were owned by the Espoo Manor from the late 16th century to the 1960s. During this period, there was constant activity in the area:

  • In the 16th century, Espoonlahti was part of the Espoo Manor’s fishing area.
  • The meadows in the area were turned into pastures because of land uplift, at the latest in the 19th century.
  • The manor’s fishermen’s croft was located in Fiskarsinmäki in the 1920s.
  • During the Porkkala lease, there was a border guard station in Fiskarsinmäki, but this did not affect the use of the area as a pasture.
  • In the 1960s, the manor sold the area next to the Nature Reserve as detached house plots, creating the Lasilaakso small-scale housing area.
