The Saaren Luontopolku Nature Trail offers a versatile and easy route right by the River Kokemäenjoki. The trail begins with a suspension bridge leading across the river into Saarenluoto, a small river island with diverse landscapes. At the very start there is a campfire and picnic spot (bring your own firewood). The trail is about two kilometres long, following mainly wide forest paths and duckboards. Clear signposts guide you along the way, and halfway through there is a bench for a short rest.
Saarenluoto is a historic area where the River Kokemäenjoki delta was located in the 14th century. As the land rose after the Ice Age, the delta gradually shifted to its current location at the coast near Pori, but the old river channels can still be seen in the terrain. A special feature here is the päkki, a rare type of wetland forest formed as an ancient river channel gradually turned into a swampy grove. The area also showcases a variety of forest types, from fresh heath forests to lush groves and dry pinewoods.
Along the route you will find small delights such as wooden sculptures of forest animals, which are especially appealing to children. Parking is available next to the suspension bridge (Kulmalantie 36, Ulvila), where you will also find a map and an information board about the trail. Saaren Luontopolku Nature Trail combines beautiful nature, fascinating history and a small adventure for the whole family.
