Öjen old-growth forest is an exceptionally large area which is mostly dominated by spruce and is swampy in places. In Öjen you can find varying habitats from lush groves to barren pinewoods. The oldest trees are nearly 200 years old and many decades have passed since the last logging. Öjen is situated close to the centre of Vaasa and is therefore a good destination for day trips. Along the trail there are information signs, a campfire site and a dry toilet. The trail is not maintained in the winter.
- In Öjen you can find varying habitats from lush groves to barren pinewoods.
- At the Öjen's highest point, at Kompassberget's rock, you can find two compass roses. They are rock formations that show four or eight points of the compass.
- You are allowed to hike in the area under the everyman´s right
- Area belongs to old-growth forest conservation programme. The area is also protected by Natura 2000 network.

From the parking lot, continue roughly 300 metres along the road to Öjen until the small bridge leading to the thematic trail and the information boards can be seen on the left side of the road.
Along the trail there are information signs with interesting facts about the nature, medicinal plants and folk tales of the area. The trail is easy to walk on because the terrain is fairly flat. However, please remember that the duckboards can be very slippery depending on the weather conditions.
