In the middle of the forest, a huge boulder is balanced on a convex rock. It has remained in place for millennia. The boulder is protected as a natural monument by the Nature Conservation Act.
The Kummakivi natural monument is located in Hauklappi and is one of the Saimaa Geopark sites in Ruokolahti. It is an approximately seven-metre-long boulder that rests on a narrow rock base, touching it with such a small surface area that it looks as if the stone is almost moving. The boulder has been protected since 1962 and has its own plot of land.
The moss bridge was originally a bridge built in the 1930s by the Kaukas company, and is composed of a series of rhomboidal stones. Its purpose was to make it easier for forestry workers to cross Lake Pitkäjärvi. Today, the bridge is used by walkers to Kummakivi and other nature lovers. A path crosses the moss bridge and the Kummakivi in varying terrain. There is a signpost to Saimaa Geopark in the parking lot at Kummakivenmäki. Another signpost can be found next to the Kummakivi.
