Metsähallitus has received special funding for the Pinkjärvi Nature Reserve in Eurajoki. The funding will be used to repair Saukonniementie road up to the Vuotava lean-to shelter parking area and to renovate the Vuotava visitor site as a whole. The additional funding must be used by the end of 2027. The aim is to repair Saukonniementie this year, after 1 August 2026, when the bird nesting season can be considered over and the road is dry. In 2027, renovation work will continue at the Vuotava visitor site.
**Schedule update, added on 4 August: Clearing work will begin on Friday, 14 August. The estimated duration of the clearing work remains 2–3 weeks as previously announced. **
The renovation of Saukonniementie will begin in August 2026 with clearing work along roadside ditches and parking areas. Fallen deadwood and other larger trees accumulated in the ditches will be moved into the forest to serve as deadwood habitat, while brush and small trees growing in the ditches will be removed. The work is scheduled to begin provisionally during week 33, depending on the completion of the contractor’s other projects. The clearing work is expected to take 2–3 weeks. This phase will be carried out by Metsähallitus’ framework contractor, Asserin Konetyö Oy.
The actual road renovation will follow. The tendering process for this contract begins in early August. The renovation work is expected to start in early September and take approximately 2–3 weeks. The roadside ditches will be restored, built-up road edges will be removed, the road surface will be regraded to a 3% crossfall, and additional crushed stone will be added where needed.
No new structures will be built at Pinkjärvi. The work involves renovating the road and parking areas that are currently in poor condition along the section marked on the map. Nature conservation requirements have been taken into account in the planning of the work. The project has been processed by the Finnish Licensing and Supervisory Authority as a Natura notification. Particular attention will be paid to the habitats of the Siberian flying squirrel during the work.
