No new reports of stomach flu on the Karhunkierros Trail – Metsähallitus still receiving illness reports from Urho Kekkonen National Park

Since Monday, 9 June, Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife has received no new reports of hikers falling ill with stomach flu on the Karhunkierros Trail. Wilderness huts and other rest areas along the Karhunkierros Trail can now be used again. However, norovirus continues to spread in Urho Kekkonen National Park, and Metsähallitus is still receiving reports of infected hikers. Visitors are advised to avoid huts and rest areas in the national park.

Do not set out on the Karhunkierros Trail – Metsähallitus closes wilderness huts due to stomach flu

New cases of stomach flu (a stomach bug causing vomiting and diarrhea) have been reported along the Karhunkierros Trail in Oulanka National Park. Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife is aware of around twenty hiking groups, in each of which at least one member has fallen ill. To prevent the illness from spreading further, Metsähallitus is closing the wilderness huts and toilets along the Karhunkierros Trail until further notice. The cause of the illness is not yet known.
