Summer arrives later in Fell-Lapland compared to southern Finland

Please note that conditions in Fell-Lapland are still wintry, and summer arrives in the fells later than in southern Finland. We recommend planning summer trips and longer hikes usually after Midsummer, for example starting the Nordkalott Trail in July. There can still be snow in the fells well into June, and melting waters raise the water levels and flows of water bodies. The meltwater is very cold, which adds to the challenge of crossing even small water bodies.
