Meiko is an extensive area with unusually valuable nature that has remained largely in its wild state. The forested highlands have clear lakes and ponds. The Meiko Nature Reserves are part of Finland's war history. Battles of the Civil War were fought in the northeastern part of the area. A large part of the Meiko area was included in the so-called Porkkala lease area. The area consists of dozens of nature reserves by the state, municipality, and private entities.

Nature at the siteThe Meiko area was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. More recent historical traces include remnants of Civil War battle trenches and fortifications and gun positions from the Porkkala lease period.
