Meiko is an extensive area with unusually valuable nature that has remained largely in its wild state. The forested highlands have clear lakes and ponds. The Meiko Nature Reserves are part of Finland's war history. Battles of the Civil War were fought in the northeastern part of the area. A large part of the Meiko area was included in the so-called Porkkala lease area. The area consists of dozens of nature reserves by the state, municipality, and private entities.

Activities and trails

Lake Meiko is an excellent place to spot different waterfowl. There are also many forest species.

Cycling is permitted on roads and on clearly distinct paths.

Meiko is an area rich in natural diversity. Here you will find a wilderness lake plateau, clear-water lakes and ponds, rugged cliffs, quiet marshes, and old forests.

The history of Meiko area

The Meiko area was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. More recent historical traces include remnants of Civil War battle trenches and fortifications and gun positions from the Porkkala lease period.

Visitor's checklist

  • The destination is a nature reserveEveryman’s Right are not valid as such in the nature reserve.
  • Make campfires only in designated sitesAlways check the current wildfire warning before making a fire. During a wildfire warning, fires are only allowed in cooking shelters with a chimney.
  • At the campfire site, only the firewood provided at the location or brought by yourself may be used.Remember to use firewood sparingly.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagThere is no recycling point in the area. Bring a trash bag and take the trash with you.
  • Always keep pets on a leashDog waste should be cleaned away from the paths.
