By car to Litokaira

The northern sections of Litokaira lies within the municipality of Ranua and the Lapland region. The southern sections of Litokaira, on the other hand, lie within the municipality of Pudasjärvi and North Ostrobothnia region. A small western section Litokaira is located in the municipality of Ii. Litokaira is on the west side of main road 78.

The easiest way to reach Litokaira is through the Ranua municipal centre. In the centre of Ranua, turn from Rovaniementie (main road 78) onto Heinisuontie. After 4 km, a gravel road branches off to the left, marked by a sign with ‘Papinpalo’ on it. Follow this road for 11 km until you reach the Papinpalo parking area, from which a signposted trail runs to the Papinpalo birdwatching tower. Parking area address: Papinpalontie 117, 93195 Ranua.

Other possible starting points for independent hikers are:

  • A forest road, Oijärventie, runs from Oijärvi to Liekokylä in Pudasjärvi, passing through the southern sections of Litokaira. Many visitors start their hikes to the north at Iso Vitikkokangas.
  • Honkakoski can be reached by driving 18 km north from the village of Oijärvi at Kuivaniemi. This is the main entrance route from the west when approaching the nature reserve. From Honkakoski, an unmarked track leads to the interior of Litokaira. At the start of the track, you must ford the Kivijoki River. You can also head from there to, for example, the Litjo open wilderness hut.
  • Ala-Korpivaara is reached by turning west from the Pudasjärvi-Ranua road (main road 78) at Asmunti village. You can also reach the wilderness from Ala-Korpivaara. The nearest base is the open wilderness hut at Kuusikkosaari, the Litokaira reindeer herders’ hut. The Polveksenoja River must be forded.

Please note that many roads are not maintained in the winter!
