In early summer, mosquitoes and, in midsummer, flies and horseflies are an inseparable part of mire life. Insects are a vital food source for many bird species nesting in the mires. The mire birdlife includes both forest birds and waterbirds, waders and passerines.

Bats fly across open areas near Kivi and Levalampi and in the forest openings of the mire islets. Some forest patches also host a small population of flying squirrels.
Only the hardiest species survive the core areas of Levaneva year-round. Black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus), capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus) and ravens (Corvus corax) dominate the winter mire. During good seed years, tits (Paridae) and woodpeckers (Picidae) start nesting even in mid-winter. In spring, the arrival of cranes (Grus grus) brings the mire back to life. Due to the harshness of the mire, cranes nest only sparsely in the area, but in summer large flocks of bachelor birds, known as non-breeders, can often be seen.
Waterbirds, waders and passerines go through an intense nesting season during May and June. Notable waders include whistling golden plovers (Pluvialis apricaria), calling wood sandpipers (Tringa glareola), acrobatic lapwings (Vanellus vanellus), and noisy whimbrels (Numenius phaeopus) and curlews (Numenius arquata). Ruff (Calidris pugnax), a northern species, can also be spotted performing their courtship displays. Among passerines, meadow pipits (Anthus pratensis) and vividly coloured yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava) are the most common.
Goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula), tufted ducks (Aythya fuligula) and teals (Anas crecca ) nest near the flarks.

Bird density is highest on the floating peat mats in the northern part of the pool area. Black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) and waterbirds are abundant here, but many waders and passerines also find good nesting places on the soft sphagnum mounds. One of the rarer nesting species of the area is the red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus), a small wader typical of the north. Other rare wader breeders include the jack snipe (Lymnocryptes minimus) and the black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa).
