In the Komio Nature Reserve, you can discover the unique nature of Häme’s ridges – the traces of the last Ice Age. Komio’s diverse nature, good trail network and varied terrain offer great opportunities for walking and nature observation. You can extend your hike by continuing on to the meandering Poronpolku Reindeer Trail, which is part of the more than 250 km long Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail.

As a hiking destination, Komio is ideal for both experienced and novice nature lovers who want to enjoy peaceful walks in a varied landscape. Komio Nature Reserve is part of the nationally significant and diverse Maakylä-Räyskälä Natura 2000 nature reserve. The geological significance of the area is due to the clearly visible glacial formations from the last Ice Age, such as ridges, kettle hole pools and large boulders. In addition to rugged ridges, the magnificent landscape is characterised by sunny and shaded forests, small clear-water ponds and open bogs, which provide varied habitats for a diverse and valuable range of plants and animals.

Humans have had an impact on Komio's ridge habitat for decades. The area has been slash-and-burned for crops, drained for marshland, cleared and cultivated for fields, and logged. The protection and management of the ridge habitat and its biodiversity is of particular importance due to the former intensive forest management. Today, a wide range of nature management activities take place in Komio to speed the restoration of the natural ridge forest. You can read about the nature management measures on the signs along the Pikku-Samo trail.

Hiking trails in the Komio Nature Reserve

Along the accessible Esteetön Samo (1 km) trail you can enjoy the wilderness of Komio in the pine forest and on the shore of Luutalampi.

The circular trails Luutaharjun Samo (6.5 km) and the shorter Pikku-Samo (3.5 km) lead you through the varied landscape of the area. Along the trails you can enjoy the biodiversity of the area and learn about the rewilding and special features of Komio's nature.

There is no official trail around Lake Luutalampi, and access to the area is prohibited from April 15 to July 31 to protect the nesting birds. The restriction is in place to safeguard the nesting area of the red-throated diver, a sensitive species that requires undisturbed conditions. Do not continue past the no-entry signs at the Luutasuo campfire site.
