Iso-Palonen – Maariansärkät Nature Reserve is a landscape of small lakes, numerous ponds, pine heaths, and ridges located in the eastern part of Kuhmo. The ridge formation that runs through the area has historically served as an important migration route and grazing area for forest reindeer.

Iso-Palonen – Maariansärkät Nature Reserve is part of the Friendship Park, which consists of five separate nature reserves, mainly located within the city of Kuhmo.
In the embrace of the ridges, the forest reindeer has found a sheltered feeding ground and a safe place to calve. In the same surroundings, hikers can also discover a spot to momentarily detach from the daily routine, let their thoughts rest, and enjoy the offerings of nature.
