Winter hiking (ski touring) in Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve

Ski hikers on the river ice. The sun shines from behind the trees. Conifer trees grow on the riverbank

Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve is suitable for challenging winter excursions and those willing to forge their own paths, as open wilderness huts are few and far between.

Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve is suitable for experienced tour skiers. The huts in the area can be used for overnight stays. Most huts in the area are located along the River Ivalojoki, which is why skiers will spend most nights in a tent during the tour. There are no marked skiing or winter hiking trails in the area. In the northeast part of the area, a snowmobile track runs via Rautujärvi and Hammasjärvi towards the village of Inari.

Picking berries and fungi in Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve

Blueberries in a tin mug. The mug is surrounded by blueberry bushes in autumn colors.

In Hammaskaira, you can supplement your picnic with natural foods or plan a day trip to pick berries. The soil in this area is low in nutrients, but you may find lingonberries, blueberries and cloudberries on suitable sites. You may come across plenty of fungi, especially boletes, milkcaps and russulas. You can pick them, unless you want to follow the reindeer herders’ example and leave them for the reindeer to enjoy in the autumn.
