A hiker stands on the summit of a fell by a small pond with a backpack on her back. Next to the hiker are two Scottish Collies, each with their own backpacks. One dog's leash is attached to the hiker's waist belt, and the other to the photographer. There are clouds in the sky in the background.

Wilderness hikes in Hammaskaira

The diverse nature of the large Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve leaves you speechless. Old pine forests flanking hills and fells, fell lakes and rivers and the rugged setting of the River Ivalojoki invite you to longer hikes. The only marked trail in the area runs from Pahaoja to Kultala on the River Ivalojoki. On this trail, hikers cross the River Ivalojoki along a suspension bridge. Gold prospectors, lumberjacks and reindeer herders have left behind their roads through the wilderness. These routes are shown on maps.

The Hammastunturi Wilderness Reserve is suitable for experienced hikers who must plan their own routes and consider the starting points, river crossings and mires in the southern part of the area. Hikers must bring their own tents for trekking through Hammastunturi wilderness: the few huts are mostly located along the River Ivalojoki.

You can plan a hike across the wilderness area or complete a loop. If you use public transport, your options for starting points are Laanila or Inari. If you are driving, possible starting points include the northern end of Lake Pasasjärvi when arriving via Ivalo, or a forest road leading towards the open wilderness hut of Suivakkojärvi.

The River Ivalojoki runs through a canyon that divides Hammastunturi wilderness into two halves. The only bridge across the river is found at Kultala.
