General Information: Why Are Hiking Trails Closed Due to Flooding in Kevo Strict Nature Reserve
- The hiking trails in Kevo Strict Nature Reserve are occasionally closed due to flooding.
- This year, the Kevojoki River is still flooded even in early summer, as the spring has been cold and snow has not yet fully melted in the fells. Melting snow flows down into the river, keeping the water level high and the temperature low. The weather forecast suggests continued cool conditions, which will likely slow the melting process and maintain high water levels.
- The Kevojoki River and its tributaries rise quickly to flood levels due to the large catchment area and numerous side streams. There are no large lakes along the river to help regulate the flow.
- Even at normal water levels, the fords have strong currents and water up to the knees. Some fords have uneven, rocky bottoms, making it difficult to find stable footing. During even mild flooding, the fords become extremely challenging, even for experienced hikers.
- According to the rules of the strict nature reserve, it is forbidden to leave marked trails. This also applies to river crossings. Therefore, it is not allowed to bypass flooded fords by moving upstream.
