Through the Eyes of the Gyrfalcon – a photography exhibition exploring the impacts of climate change in the North. The photography exhibition by the Finnish Environment Institute is on display from 6 to 22 April 2026 at the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre in Hetta.
What will Lapland look like when temperatures rise by 4–5 degrees over the next 50 years compared with the pre-industrial era? The photography exhibition Through the Eyes of the Gyrfalcon, organised by the Finnish Environment Institute, presents the impacts of climate change from the falcon’s perspective, showing how it affects northern nature, livelihoods, and the lives of local people.
The exhibition takes visitors north
In northern regions, climate change is already visible both in nature and in people’s everyday lives. Winters have become milder, and periods of extreme, biting cold are increasingly rare. Environmental change is now so rapid that within a single human generation, open fell landscapes turn into young forests, clear-water lakes become brown and turbid, and instead of salmonid fish, traps increasingly catch cyprinids, perch and pike.
Through the Eyes of the Gyrfalcon – The northern region in the grip of climate change -brings together, in one place, a comprehensive overview of the impacts of climate change in northern Norway and in Lapland in Finland and Sweden. The exhibition combines powerful photographic art with a solid scientific foundation.
The exhibition by the Finnish Environment Institute
The exhibition is part of the Finnish Environment Institute’s Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity in the Barents Region (BARIMS) project, and its implementation has involved experts and researchers from Finland, Sweden and Norway. The exhibition production, videos and technical implementation were carried out by the advertising agency Laboratorio Uleåborg. The exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment and funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
