Tips for spring hiking in nature destinations in Southern Finland
Spring is a wonderful time for hiking! The lengthening days and awakening nature invite you to explore nearby natural areas or head farther afield to discover new destinations. Early spring hikers should keep a few general considerations in mind when planning their trip.
Accessibility of the destination
Nature destinations are all unique. Trails may include structures or natural features whose availability or usability affects how passable the route is or how accessible the destination is. These may include, for example, cable ferries, rowboats for crossings, or fording points. There may also be movement restrictions at the destination to protect sensitive nature. Check the description of your planned destination or route on the luontoon.fi website.

Road conditions
The condition of roads leading to hiking destinations varies. Paved roads usually remain drivable even during the spring thaw, but gravel roads can turn muddy or become uneven and rutted. If a road has been maintained during winter, it is likely to be drivable already in early spring. Always check before setting out whether there are any special notes regarding the parking area at your destination or any notices about exceptional road conditions.
Weather conditions
If you are heading out on a longer trip, be sure to follow weather forecasts. Spring weather can be unpredictable! In addition to forecasts, it is advisable to check current warnings on the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website (en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi). Even after the snow has melted, nature in spring can be very dry, and wildfire warnings are often in effect already early in the season.

Equipment for spring hiking
In spring, conditions along the trail can vary greatly even within a small area, depending on terrain and the direction it faces. Even if a route already seems to be in summer condition, shaded sections may still have snow, ice, water, or slush. The earlier in the spring you go hiking, the more important it is to pay attention to slippery trails. Heavily used paths can become icy, and wet ice is extremely slippery. Be prepared with waterproof footwear, traction aids, and, if needed, walking poles.
Deceptively warm spring weather can change quickly, so pack extra clothing and windproof layers.

Ticks
Ticks become active surprisingly early in spring. These small creatures can transmit several unpleasant diseases, so it is advisable to protect yourself by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers and to do a tick check after your trip. Remember to check your pets as well!
Snakes
Snakes can be encountered especially on sunny rocky areas, where they come out to warm themselves after hibernation. Cold and sluggish snakes are not dangerous. Please leave them undisturbed.
