Variable conditions and occasional wildfire warnings on the trails of Rokua
Spring and the melting of snow have progressed rapidly in Rokua National Park. Despite this, the use of summer hiking trails is not yet completely effortless. In the terrain of Rokua, there may still be snow and slippery spots on the trails in shaded areas and at the bottoms of hollows, which should be taken into account when planning your hike.
In Rokua National Park, the hiking trails typically become completely free of snow and ice during May.
On the mostly dry, sandy grounds of Rokua, thawing does not generally cause problems on the trails, which dry quickly from meltwater. However, the few spring rains also mean that a wildfire warning is occasionally in effect in Rokua. Check the current wildfire warnings before your hike on the Finnish Meteorological Institute's website (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi). Rokua National Park is included in the western part of North Ostrobothnia region in the service.
In Rokua National Park, making fires is strictly prohibited during a wildfire warning. This ban also applies to designated fire pits with chimneys due to the fire sensitivity of the terrain. The use of camping stoves is allowed wherever movement is permitted. The use of twig stoves is not allowed during a wildfire warning due to the risk of sparks.
