River Oulankajoki Is No Longer Flooding – Karhunkierros Trail Open for
Hikers
With this year's dramatic spring floods, nature showed us her might in the
Oulanka National Park. The flood raised the water level of the River Oulankajoki
by 2.8 metres. The flood peak is now over, and it is once again safe to hike on
the Karhunkierros Trail.

Memories from the Karhunkierros Hiking Trail!
Take a look at photos of old landscapes. Have they changed in 50
years?
To honour the 50th anniversary of the Karhunkierros Hiking Trail,
Metsähallitus will publish old photos dating from the early days of the trail.
As such, the photos are fascinating and they also offer us a glimpse into the
history of the popular hiking trail.
A Popular Hiking Trail for 50 Years (2005)
Karhunkierros Trail was marked in the summer of 1954 to lead past the most
magnificent sights in northern Kuusamo. The markings were drawn with varnish and
red ochre. The people to mark the trail were a group of nature-loving hikers,
some of whom had visited the sights in Oulanka already in the 1940s. There were
a few herders’ cabins on the trail and the first hanging bridges were completed
the same summer the making was done.
