In addition to national
parks there are many other protected areas, which have been established to
conserve and research, for example, mires, herb-rich forests, bird wetlands and
old-growth forests. The majority of these areas belong to the European Union’s
Natura 2000 network.
Rules and regulations for protected areas vary. Hiking is allowed in some of
these areas as an Everyman’s Right, while entering other areas is completely
forbidden. Entering and movement is restricted especially in strict nature
reserves. Hiking is allowed at least to some extent in all the nature
conservation areas and Natura 2000 sites featured on the Outdoors.fi pages.
